Last month I caught the Cindy Sherman retrospective at the MoMa. Known for her provocative photographs that explore issues of identity and representation, she's spent the past four decades being the art director,
makeup artist, costume designer, photographer, and model
in her own portraits.
Her photographs
draw from all aspects of modern and historical portraiture. Some themes were too dark for my taste especially the room full of sexually charged photos made of mannequin parts and raw materials. Sherman's
more recent work references portraits of aging socialites, offering a critique of society's preoccupation with youth, status, and
wealth.
