While I don't follow trance much these days, it's still interesting news when old, fave DJs make it into popular publications. Trance has had a much shorter ("short" being relative because 15,000+ capacity venues are still selling out) popularity lifespan here than it has in other countries, especially Southeast Asia. I have no idea why but I'm sure there's a study on this and how it's related to the average intake of MDMA vs. rising pop singers.
DJs are fascinating creatures - a bit like supermodels and 'Bradgelina' - they have become the uber celebrities. Some of you may remember the rise of Paul Oakenfold, who is a 2x Grammy nominee and probably one of the least attractive DJs that I've ever gushed over. I am embarrassed to say that I may have logged over 50 hours (in sum) standing in front of dj booths waving glowsticks at him. While some of Oakenfold's work was quite good, not all of it deserved the throws of crazy fans that always seemed to be in tow.
Tiesto's worldwide tour is coming to the Cow Palace in November. Friends want me to go but I cringe at the thought of dancing in a stadium with all the teenage candy ravers. Yes, candy ravers live on still. His new album, Kaleidoscope, supposedly steps out of his usual acid house, trance beats to explore other styles.
Not sure I can tell, I still feel kind of gay listening to it.
